Make a plan for evacuation is a must if you live in a house or an apartment building. Your plan should ensure all family members when outside at night and a safe meeting place. Have smoke detectors in all sleeping areas as well as elsewhere in the home. Additionally locate carbon monoxide detectors wherever there might be a source of combustion such as near the furnace, the kitchen, or the fireplace. Renew the batteries at the beginning and end of Daylight Savings Time or twice annually. You should also test these warning devices periodically to ensure they work. Find all exits including windows. Do you have a primary escape route (probably from the door of the bedroom) and likely an alternative exit from the bedroom window (make sure it can be easily opened). Has a portable fire escape in every second or third floor bedroom. Find all windows, which operate as outputs.
Do your primaries escape route and the backup escape route for all members of your family as it is a real fire. Practice hands and knees crawling, and exit to your meeting place to gather. Follow your plan for real, if heavy smoke or heat. If the door feels hot, do not open it and use your alternate escape route. Once you have escaped, and made all members of your family not to return to the structure.
